My purpose here at Lozzy’s Lenormand has always been to share with my readers guidance and information on Lenormand cards and how they are and can be used. It’s not so I can be some kind of guru and tell you what you MUST do, but to give you as much info as you need so you can use the cards in whatever ways are most useful to you personally.
Everyone is different, of course and what’s “most useful” will be different for different people —so today I’m looking at the ways you can personalize YOUR Lenormand practice and things to think about so that it truly works for you.
1. Work With The Deck Or Decks That Speak To You
Although fundamentally the card meanings are the same across ALL decks, it’s not unusual to find that you seem to work best with one deck or decks over others. It may be because the design seems to pull you into the meanings more, it may be that that deck has additional cards you like to use, it may be a deck you’ve designed yourself, or it may be an independent artist’s deck that appeals. You may want to use playing card meanings, you may feel only a “traditional” deck works properly for you. Some decks may feel as though they somehow give you more insight or depth, or lean more towards the psychological or spiritual, or you may gain more from creating one yourself. Up to you.

2. Find The Reading Methods You’re Most Comfortable With
On this site, I’ve provided detailed step by step instructions for all the main Lenormand readings.
This is because I think it offers you the chance to see exactly how much information you can actually get from the cards and how you can be systematic in squeezing the most out of your readings. This is also why my reports are systematic when providing client readings of my own or card interpretation reports for my readers. But there’s no reason you have to use all the steps at all times, especially with larger layouts like the Grand Tableau.
As you practice, you may find that you start adding, leaving out or tweaking different bits because you want a bit extra, something seems to work more easily for you and make more sense. That’s fine! Not only fine, it’s great! It tends to show that you’re naturally starting to get the hang of the cards and personalising your readings. There is no Lenormand Law that says you MUST do XYZ or the Lenormand police will get you. Instead, view it as guidance to how to get the most out of the cards.
3. Think About What You Want From The Cards & Why
What is the purpose of cartomancy in your life? Is it for fun, like a party trick, or do you want to use it seriously as a way of connecting with spirit or a higher or universal power? Do you want to explore the universal mysteries of life, or do you want the cards to accurately tell you your future and/or give you advice? Is it more that you want to build your intuition, creativity or psychic skills?
Or is it just that you want a different system from Tarot or any other cards you may use, in order to get more rounded insights? Do you want to use your Lenormand reading to help others or is it more of a personal spiritual or self development practice for yourself? Is it a private thing or something you share? Do you want to become a master of or find a definitive way to read the future and learn so you can teach or read for others, or do you just consider cards a useful exploratory tool to use on a personal or spiritual journey? These are just some examples. None are or right or wrong.
As time goes on, the answer to these questions for you personally should not only become apparent, but will start to influence the decisions you make in your future readings as well as how you choose to learn. Such as how often you read, under what circumstances what, if any, rituals you use, what layouts you tend to go for. What questions you will and will not ask, who you will and will not read for and in which ways?
Take a look at this post which looks at some of the issues relating what you want from the cards.

4. Consider Your Own Philosophy Regarding The Cards
Following on from that, what is the MEANING of the cards in your life? How and why do you think they work? How do they fit into the rest of your life and world view? Do the cards control your fate or give you tools to take control of it? Do they give you a key to what’s predestined for you, or do they give you clues to possibilities to consider so you can make your own future? How would you use them in a way that honours your life philosophy?
Some of my readers for instance, are explicit about the fact they aren’t interested in fortune telling, other readers that that’s all they really want. The cards will allow you to do both, but obviously it influences what kind of readings you do, what layouts you use, what type of questions you ask. Take a look here for some posts on those issues and how it might impact the way you use the cards.

5. Align Your Practice With Your Spiritual And Cultural Beliefs
Similarly, what are your spiritual beliefs with regard to the cards, cartomancy in general? If you believe in a higher power, or spiritual framework, what kind of power or framework is it? Is it God or something else? Do readings contain messages from spirits or guides or the higher self especially for you or are they generated through something like say, Jung’s idea of the collective unconscious? Or are they not really spiritual at all, but purely generated from within yourself, to help you guide yourself as a psychological tool?
Think, too, what it is that would personally make you feel relaxed in a reading— or very uncomfortable. This can be about questions you would and would not answer for ethical reasons but there are psychological and spiritual issues too. What can you add to your practice or change to ensure you are always relaxed and clear-headed? And how do you honour and respect your spiritual beliefs? Do you have particular rituals, for example? Cleansing, protection, remembering to thank? The beauty of Lenormand is its flexibility. It doesn’t fit cleanly into any one tradition and uses universal symbols; so can be applied however you want.
6. Decide If You’ll Just Do This for Yourself or For Others Too
This affects how you choose to read and what methods you learn and what other factors you need to consider. Once you start reading for others, your own personality and personal motivations really start coming to the fore. Are you here to help people? Are you a straight talker or someone who prefers to go round the houses a bit and be a bit more gentle? Are you predominantly a fortune teller or a guide—or a counsellor? What can people expect from you? What are your personal ethics? What are you really good at and what is your personal style?

7. Decide How You Use The Cards. By Themselves or Mixed With Other Things?
You may be a Lenormand purist or you may not. You may, for instance, decide you’d like to use Lenormand in conjunction with Tarot for different aspects of a reading, or you may want to incorporate it with other aspects of say, your spiritual or personal development practice, whether that’s connected with rituals, timings, or other divinatory methods. You may be more interested in the esoteric side of things (astrology, crystals, spells and so on) and associated traditions, or you may use Lenormand on its own or take a more down-to-earth approach to the cards.
8. Use Your Personal Traits
We all have unique skills, talents, personalities and experiences. And the more you practice reading the cards, the more you’ll find yourself bringing those into your reading practice to make it really our own. Are you more of an intuitive person, an empath or someone who is purely logical? Are you aware you have any particular more psychic abilities (clairvoyance, clairsentience, claircognizance, for instance) that you can bring to readings, or do you not believe in that and take a more purely psychological or philosophical approach? Do you want to become a Lenormand master as part of a quest for self or spiritual knowledge, or do you primarily want to help others? Starting to think about all the issues I mention here should highlight what is most important in YOUR life, so you can tailor your own card-reading approach to what truly works for you.
