Being able to apply the Lenormand card meanings in different contexts—such as different life areas, like money, love, or career—is important to be able to do when you want to ask the cards specific questions, or relate the cards to particular situations or life areas. I looked at some of the reasons why it’s such a useful tool for your Lenormand reading back in this post:
Why Context Is Important In Lenormand Readings
And gave you some ideas here:
How To Tell A Story With Lenormand
It’s not just important for context-specific reading and questions though.
Take the example readings I laid out in my post A Simple Clock Reading for New Year, where the Astrological Reading has different sections covering different life areas. Also some of the layouts I suggested in Tips For Building A Personalised Lenormand Layout
So what are the keys to being able to apply your Lenormand card meanings to different situations?
1. Make sure you know the cards’ underlying ESSENCE meanings first
To be able to read the cards fluently in different situations, you have to know their meanings well, to the point you can really get underneath them.
It’s also helpful to try and find the most basic or fundamental meaning of each card that you can. To get to the root of the meaning of each card. And really FEEL it.
And don’t forget, if you want to get REALLY n depth with card meanings and get PLENTY of practice, do check out my

2. Apply those essence meanings to the situation or question asked
Let’s try this with just ONE Lenormand card for now, so you can see what I mean. Let’s start with a relatively easy one: the Mice card.
The Mice: Worries, diminishment, losses
Think about this card for a second. How would you view the Mice if your question was about Love? And how might you view it differently if it was about Money? What about if it was your Home and Domestic Life? And what if it was about your Job or Career instead?
Would you interpret it in exactly the same way each time? Probably not. Because even though the Mice will always have a meaning that is basically about worries, diminishment and losses at its core, it reads slightly differently if you put that fundamental essence meaning into different situations:
- If your question was about Love, you might be being a bit neurotic about your relationship, or find your marriage being undermined and diminished, nibbled away by something.
- If your question was about Money, it’s more likely that you are suffering financial diminishment, poverty, and losses
- If it was your Home and Domestic Life, you could have a literal infestation in your home!
- If it was your Job or Career? It’s more likely to be around anxiety and troubles, stress.
See what I mean?
Reading Cards In The Astrological Houses for the Astrological Clock Spread
Now, let’s get back to our Astrological Spread. What might the Mice card mean if you found it in each of these 12 Astrological Houses?
Aries (Self): Feeling underconfident, stressed or diminished
Taurus (Property, Resources, Money): Financial losses are indicated
Gemini (Communication, Knowledge, Creativity): You may be coming across in an anxious manner
Cancer (Home, Family, Roots): Something is gnawing away at your family security or home life
Leo (Pleasure, Risk, Love, Attention): You’re probably finding yourself socially anxious or not liking attention
Virgo (Responsibility, Work): Work may be stressful
Libra (Partnership, Marriage, Commitment): There are niggles in your partnership or it’s being undermined
Scorpio (Death, Sex, Psychic Abilities) : You find yourself worrying and you don’t know why
Sagittarius (Freedom, Philosophy, Higher Learning): You may find your freedom diminished
Capricorn (Status, Reputation, Authority) : You could find your reputation and confidence undermined
Aquarius (Social Life, Dreams, Purpose) : You could find your dreams diminished
Pisces (Intuition, Secrets, Subconscious, Mystical): Something is niggling at you; a gut feeling, perhaps.
Why not try it yourself? Pick a different card from your deck, and think about what it could mean if it appeared in each of these 12 Astrological houses.
3. Know how to combine two cards or more
The basics of card combinations are as follows:
- In the Lenormand system, cards are usually read in pairs
- Cards to the right influence those cards on their left. Cards above influence cards below.
- You can treat the ‘influenced’ card as the noun or topic, and an ‘influencing’ card as an adjective or modifier
- Even with more than two cards, you still read the cards in pairs. For instance, if you have three cards, you can read Cards 1+ 2 as a pair, 2+3 as a pair, and 1+3 as a pair around the card in the middle.
For more detail on this, check out Three Card Spread and 3 Quick & Easy Ways To Read A 3-Card Spread
Let’s take a look at three cards which include the Mice again, to give us a bit more information and detail. Again, if you’re going to try applying these to contexts, it’s best to use the most core and essence meaning you can.
Stars = Ambitions, Goals, Hopes, Big Dreams
Mice = Worries, diminishment, losses
Garden = Public, Social, People & Groups
Cards 1+3 around 2 = Shared or public goals undermined or diminished
Cards 1+ 2 = Diminished or lost dreams
Cards 2+3 = Public or shared losses, loss of face, social diminishment
Core interpretation of these three cards:
Goals and dreams are lost and diminished in a public or social manner
4. Tie the cards together into a ‘story’ that makes sense in that context
Now we’re going to tie the SAME three cards and that basic interpretation into the context of the Astrological House they fall in. A good way to think of this, just as we said with Lenormand Houses in a Grand Tableau, is to imagine that the House provides the ‘stage’ or backdrop for the events of the cards to play out on, which may give subtle changes to their meanings.
What might our three card mean if you found the SAME set of cards in each of the 12 Astrological Houses in our Astrological Spread? Remember, our basic meaning is:
Goals and dreams are lost and diminished in a public or social manner
Aries (Self): You may find yourself losing face publicly when goals and dreams are lost
Taurus (Property, Resources, Money): You could experience the shared loss of a financial goal
Gemini (Communication, Knowledge, Creativity): You may be coming across as unconfident and unambitious in the social sphere
Cancer (Home, Family, Roots): There could be an undermining of a sense of shared purpose in your home life
Leo (Pleasure, Risk, Love, Attention): You may find public focus on your ambitions and achievements embarrassing
Virgo (Responsibility, Work): You could find your ambitions and dreams undermined by those around you
Libra (Partnership, Marriage, Commitment): Again, there could be an erosion of a sense of shared purpose in your relationship
Scorpio (Death, Sex, Psychic Abilities) : You could find yourself inexplicably worried when out and about and could be experiencing anxiety dreams
Sagittarius (Freedom, Philosophy, Higher Learning): You may find the idea of freedom and higher explorations out in the world scary
Capricorn (Status, Reputation, Authority) : You could find your achievements diminished and a loss of public reputation
Aquarius (Social Life, Dreams, Purpose) : Your dreams could be undermined by others when they are brought into the public sphere
Pisces (Intuition, Secrets, Subconscious, Mystical): You could be subconsciously fearful of achieving your ambitions in the outside world.
Now pull three cards of your own and think how you would interpret them in each of the 12 astrological houses.
Then try using all 36 cards (three in each Astrological “House”) and doing the reading for the yourself!
Want A Reading From Me?
I don’t offer Astrological Clock readings as part of my service but I DO offer several other reading types. Check out details below!
*Please note, you will need your own deck of Lenormand cards & to draw the cards yourself*
Grand Tableau Short Report $19.99
What do the cards want to tell you? This short report, based on the cards most immediately influencing the Querent ONLY, is the most akin to a traditional Lenormand reading. Usually blunt and to the point, it’s a popular general reading for those who are curious as to what the cards have to tell them: but is less suitable if you have specific questions. It is the cards which choose the topics, not the Querent!
Average report length: 5-7pp. Turnaround: 48 hours approx
Grand Tableau Key Areas Report $39.99
This is an expanded Grand Tableau report, based not only on the cards most immediately influencing the Querent, but also offering more exploration of client-specified areas of interest, and takes the ‘bigger picture’ story of the spread into account. That said, the cards will still only tell you what they want to tell you, and is unlikely to answer questions as directly or clearly as a smaller reading would. Key areas for focus might include Love or Career/Business Matters, Problems to Watch Out For, Areas of Success, for instance.
Average report length 10-12pp. Turnaround: 72 hours approx
Grand Tableau Full Report $84.99
This is an FULL and detailed Grand Tableau report, based not only on the cards most immediately influencing the Querent, but also offering explorations of ALL of the other cards in the reading, woven into a story directly relating to you. As such, there is a lot of detail, which can be overwhelming to the unitiated. Once again, as a general reading, my Full Grand Tableau is unlikely to answer questions as directly or clearly as a smaller reading would.
Average report length: 18-19pp. Turnaround: 8-10 days approx
NOT SURE WHICH SPREAD TO CHOOSE?
“I want to ask the cards a specific question on a life area eg love or work or about a person.”
Choose one of the short 5 card or 9 card reports.
5 card readings are more direct, 9 card readings more analytical and exploratory.
“I don’t have a specific question: I want a general reading, and to see what the cards have to tell me!
Choose a short Grand Tableau Report but be prepared for the cards to be quite blunt and to pick up whatever life areas they think you need to know about!
“I don’t have a specific question: I want a general reading, but also to see what the cards have to tell me about one or two specific life areas OR ask if a particular issue is showing up.”
Choose a Key Areas Grand Tableau Report for a more exploratory reading, and ask me to focus on particular areas and the overall picture as well as what’s appearing immediately around you, in the spread. Be aware the cards won’t necessarily be able to answer all questions directly or in the exact way you want; it will still depends on the story showing in the spread!
“I don’t have a specific question: I want a general reading, but on ALL possible life areas.”
Choose a FULL Grand Tableau Report for a detailed exploratory reading which looks at ALL 36 cards and strings them together in a storytelling way. Be aware there is a LOT of information in this reports, which some readers may find overwhelming.
