As many of my readers will probably know, I’m not generally a massive fan of Yes/No Lenormanding, as personally, I find the approach a bit superficial and would rather get in-depth with the cards to get a complete answer to my questions.
However, there are times when you might just quickly want an at-a-glance overall Yes” or “No” feel of a spread.
Can you get one? Yes you can. How?
You can get one by looking at the predominance of positive or negative cards in answer to your particular question.
Positive  Usually “Yes” cards – and reasons why they are
As well as the list below, I’m including the reasons why the following cards would usually be positive in response to a yes/no question.
Rider – Arrival
Clover – Luck, Good Fortune
Bouquet – Blessings, Gift
Child –Â Openness, Beginning
Stars – Hopes, Dreams, Wishes, Achievement
Dog – Friend, Support
Heart – Love, Warmth
Sun – Success, Happiness
Moon – Emotions, Creativity, Manifestation
Key – Answer, Destiny
Fish – Abundance, Flow
Anchor – Stability, Certainty
Negative Usually “No” cards – and reasons why
Again, I’m including the reasons why these cards are likely to indicate a ‘no’ in response to a question
Clouds – Uncertainty
Snake – Problems, negativity, betrayals
Coffin – Life drained, ending
Scythe – Cuts, pain. reduction
Whip – Challenges and conflicts
Fox –Â Something stolen
Mountain –Â Blocks, delays, No
Mice – Worries
Cross –Â Burdens and troubles
So Which Cards Are NEITHER Positive or Negative?
Consider ALL other cards to be basically neutral. That’s right – if they are not on the lists above, they do not generally have a particularly positive or negative connotation.
So, if you’re doing a 3 card, 5-card, or 9-card reading:
- If you have more positive cards than negative the reading is tending towards the answer Yes. BUT be careful to read what the cards are actually saying too. See the Other Factors point below.
- If you have more negative cards than positive, then the reading is tending towards the answer No. But again, be sure to read the cards themselves to get the full message.
What If My Spread Has EQUAL Numbers of Positive/Negative Cards or Mainly Neutral Cards?
Generally speaking, this indicates that there really IS no overall yes or no answer, and there are other factors at play, such as your own efforts and input into the situation concerned. Use the information in the rest of the cards to make that call. And remember: There does come a time where you have to stop relying on cards to give you all the answers for your life. If you find yourself frustrated when it won’t give you the answer or hope you want, or keep on asking and asking, it’s a suggestion that it is YOU who needs to examine the situation, and wherever possible, start taking action yourself to drive what it is you want
Other Factors To Bear In Mind
The surrounding cards, positions and combinations of cards are also extremely important in any reading, regardless of the overall general positivity and negativity in the spread.
As we saw in the post about card order making a difference to the meaning of combinations; any negative-looking card can be tempered by a positive one and vice versa.
Again, this is why I generally prefer not to do yes/no readings but rather to read the spread fully as it is. Card order and the actual cards involved can be incredibly important and make big differences to overall meanings. You could happily be assuming that something is a definite YES, for example, on seeing mainly lovely positive cards, when in fact there’s actually big fat Snake card sitting at the end of your five card spread casting a dark squall over everything.
On the flipside, you might find yourself filled with doom and gloom because you’ve got three or four negative cards, but then there’s a lovely big Sun sitting at the end of your chain of cards, telling you to be positive, because it’ll all most likely be OK in the end!
So it depends what your needs are, but personally, I would use the yes/no thing rarely. It can be useful to get the overall feel for a question, but it isn’t the whole story by any means.

SAMPLE ONE QUESTION 9-CARD READING
Thank you, Lozzy, for another super useful post. Happy new year!
Thank you, and Happy New Year to you too, Milagritos!
Just recently found your little nook in the Lenormandworld and greatly enjoying it. This post was very useful for me. Especially the part how to handle when you get a draw in yes/no questions. Before I have usually said: “It is yet to be decided”. But your approach is so much more empowering!
Thank you Anna! Glad you’re enjoying it!
Hello Lozzy,
I have a question please.
If I have 2 positive cards and 2 negative cards with 1 neutral card being the stork and the key at the end of my 5 card spread, does the key means everything will be okay? Or not? I did a yes or no question. The stork is next to the key at the end of my 5 card spread. Can you please give me some advice?
Thank you kindly.
Hi Valentino,
This is why it’s not always that useful to just ask yes and no questions. The spread doesn’t tell you yes or no or ‘everything will be all right” ; it’s saying “it could go either way”. This means it is more likely that YOUR actions control what happens. The Stork suggests that it is you that has to make any change involved. All the Key tells you at the end is that you will have your answer and make your own fate. You will need to look at the rest of the cards in the spread in detail for the other influences.
