Unlike the Grand Tableau, the 9-Card spread, along with the 5-Card Spread, is one of the ‘standard’ Lenormand spreads you can use for more day-to-day or regular readings. It comprises of a 3×3 ‘box’ where you read and combine the cards in threes, horizontally, vertically, and diagonally
For a step-by-step reminder of how to read it for yourself, check out How To Read The 9-Card Spread for instructions.
You can see a couple of 9-Card readings here in my SAMPLE ONE QUESTION 9-CARD READING report, and also my post here on How To Read Lenormand People Cards.
So what are the most important things worth knowing about the 9-Card Spread?
1. It’s a reading that allows you to explore a specific area of interest
Got a question on ONE specific area of your life but want it to go a bit in-depth with it? The 9-Card spread is the one. The centre card, whether you use a themed keycard or not (see below), provides the core issue of the reading. The 9-Card spread is also great for digging deeper into an issue that might have come up in another reading. So, say you do a 5-card spread and a card comes up and you think, “Huh? What is THAT card about? What’s it doing there?” You can then use a 9-card spread with that card in the centre to tell you more.
2. It is a good reading for asking particular questions
Although like most Lenormand readings the 9-card spread won’t necessarily give you straight “yes/no” answers, it tends to be one you’d use when you do have a particular question to ask the cards and want to focus the reading, as opposed to, say, the Grand Tableau, which is a large general reading covering ALL life areas and not really suitable for questions. The 9-Card Spread has enough cards within it to really show the influences on a particular situation and get to the nub of what’s going on
3. It gives past, present, and future influences
Unlike the 5-Card spread, the 9-Card Spread is more clear about dividing things into past, present and future influences, although obviously these can also combine to give an overall sense of the reading. In that sense, it is often a little more exploratory, giving the background and additional information required to understand a particular situation and where that is likely to go in the (generally) near future.
4. It is usually a fairly short-term reading
Unlike a Grand Tableau, which usually covers periods of 6 to 12 months or more, the ‘future’ that the 9-card spread indicates tends to be fairly nearby, although it tends to be related to the situation at hand rather than a specific time period per se. The key, really, with a 9-Card spread is focus. Focusing on the issue at hand.
5. It can form a section of a Grand Tableau reading
You will notice, if you do a Grand Tableau, that you could actually do a 9-Card spread to hone in on most life areas within that (although depending on the positioning, you may only be able to read some of the cards around your ‘central’ card). I usually use a 9-Card spread around the Querent card as part of my Grand Tableau readings, for example. It’s a good method to use if you find you want to explore an area of your Grand Tableau in even more depth. Just find the card representing the life area you wish to explore, and read the cards around it just like you would a normal 9-Card spread.
6. You can choose whether or not to use a keycard as the centre card or read it ‘blind’
The example I gave above necessarily means using a designated keycard to be the centre of the reading, usually representing a life area, like the Fox for career or Heart for love, or perhaps a Man or Woman to find out more. But you don’t have to do this and sometimes you get deeper and more meaningful answers if you don’t use a keycard. It’s why I now do a reading both with and without keycards for all my client readings that aren’t for a Grand Tableau.
For more on this issue of keycards, check out the post Keycard or Not Keycard: That Is The Question
7. It is a great spread for further investigation and for doing exploratory readings
Sometimes you might have further questions that come up when you do a reading. Either a card that comes up that you want to know more about, or a further area of questioning that arises. Especially when you are doing readings for yourself, you can keep on asking further and further questions as they arise and the 9-card is often useful for doing that, if you want a little bit of depth to the answers you’ll get. The 9-Card spread is a quite detailed reading and can give you quite a lot of information.
