Following on from my previous post about 5 Big Mistakes re: accuracy in your Lenormand interpretations, I wanted to go in depth a little more about Lenormand questions, and the issue of “How do I get the cards to answer the question in MY situation?” as it is an issue that comes up quite a bit. I must say that I do often notice beginner readers, when trying to interpret cards, are sometimes not actually answering the question asked directly, so this week’s post is focused on that aspect of Lenormand reading.
So! To questions it is! First off, let’s look at the different types of question you might ask.
What Types Of Question Are There?
There are a TON of different ways people might ask questions of the cards
There are:
- Yes/No questions
- “Will” future oriented/fortune telling questions
- Open-to-anything general “What will happen to me today?” type questions
- What/How type exploratory questions or those that just want to explore possible influences around a situation
- Questions that ask for advice and actions
- Questions that are specific to different contexts or life areas, such as love, work, money, family and so on.
So let’s take ONE example of a 3-card reading from some of the posts I’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks on Facebook, and see how the card meanings and interpretations are impacted specifically by the TYPE of questions you ask.
The Basic Reading
So here are your three cards. The basic meanings of each are as follows:
Scythe – Cuts, breaks, decisions
Key – Answers, significance, importance
Ring – Bonds, ties, agreements, contracts, deals, commitments
Remember, in card combinations, the second card in ANY pair usually influences the first. So here, a basic reading might be:
Scythe- Key: an important cut or decision
Key – Ring: an agreed or committed answer or commitment of significance
Scythe-Ring: An agreed or committed decision, the breaking of an agreement or commitment
So at the most basic, these cards suggest some kind of important decision or split relating to a commitment of significance. An agreed or arranged break that is of importance in some way.
Now, let’s look at the same cards in relation to different types of question.
Yes/No questions
Does the future look good for this situation I’m in?
Now, ordinarily, you can get an idea of whether a reading is tipping more towards the yes/no or the neutral by looking at the overall spread of positive, negative and neutral cards in the spread.

So what do our three cards in this reading indicate? Well, the Scythe is a negative card, the Key is a positive card… and the Ring is a neutral card. So this one is a mixed bag, although it should be pointed out that the negative card is moving more into the past.
So in this case, we’d have to look more at the detail of the reading. Does the future of this situation look good? Answer: Perhaps. It depends on how positively or negatively you feel about the answer, which was “The future involves some kind of important decision or split relating to a commitment of significance. An agreed or arranged break that is of importance in some way.”
“Will” future oriented/fortune telling questions
How will this situation turn out?
Here, you just future-orient your answer. For example:
This situation will involve an important decision or split happening that relates to a commitment of significance. There will be an agreed or arranged break that is of importance in some way.
Open-to-anything general “What will happen to me today?” type questions
What is coming up for me today?
Again, you relate the answer specifically to the focus of the question.
Today, you will be making an important decision or split happening that relates to a commitment of significance. There is likely to be an agreed or arranged break that is of importance in some way.
What/How type exploratory questions
What are the current influences around this situation?
These types of questions are more exploratory, and less future-oriented or predictive than the ones we’ve looked at so far.
The cards show a significant situation, or one of importance, around which there are signs of a crucial decision or split happening, or an agreement or commitment being broken.
Questions that ask for advice and actions
What action should I take to resolve this situation?
Here, you can use the cards far less passively and to indicate ACTIONS to consider. They are not about “this is what your future is and there’s nothing you can do,” they are about taking control of it, making your own.
The key to resolving this situation is for you to make an important decision and break off a commitment of some kind, or to commit to doing so.
Questions that are specific to different contexts or life areas, such as love, work, money, family and so on.
What should I look at doing next in my business?
Here, you may have any one of the different question types as above, but you’ll also need to apply the card meanings to the context of your question. Here, this is an ‘action’ and advice question but also in a business context.
It looks as though it will be extremely important for your business for you to make a decision or separate yourself from or break a particular deal or business contract. Cut the ties!
