Friend Or Foe? Using Lenormand To Unmask An Enemy

As we know, Lenormand and other oracle cards can be excellent at uncovering hidden details about situations and people. And there are various ways we can do this to identify who is who.

But what happens if you get a situation where “something” or rather “someone” keeps coming up in readings, even if not necessarily all with Lenormand cards, that suggests you have an enemy working against you? I’m sure it’s happened to many of  you, and it’s certainly happened to me. In fact, I appear to have at least one such person right now!

But who? What? Why?

And how might we use our Lenormand cards to find out and unmask them?

So here, I’m going to suggest some spreads that might help if you find yourself in such a situation. A couple of smaller layouts, and then a look at if and how you can uncover any enemies that might be troublemaking in the Grand Tableau.

So for all you Miss Marples (or Maigrets) out there… let our investigations commence!

The mighty Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, BBC TV

Method 1: Use A 9-Card Box Spread… Or Two!

This is the classic method using a classic layout. Ideally, you use a keycard and put the “Enemy” figure card in the middle, whether it be Snake for a troublemaker, Fox for a deceiver or fake person, or just Mountain to represent enmity and obstacles (the Mountain, after all, was the original Petit Lenormand Mighty Enemy Card!) and read it in the exact same way as you’d always read the 9-Card Spread.

If you need to remember how to do that, you can check out a bunch of resources for reading the 9-Card Spread here:

Resources

So what if my “Enemy” was someone being deceptive or false? Here’s my spread using the Fox card, and the Primal Lenormand deck, which is of course, a copy of the original Game of Hope cards. What does it say?

“Tell Me About My Deceitful Enemy”

Note that when I overturned the deck and looked at the bottom card, it came up with… The Mountain! The enemy!

  • So what is it saying? Well, it’s got something to with broken agreements or deals (Ring, Scythe), as well as heartbreak, it seems (Scythe, Heart). Interestingly, it appears to be a Lady and Gentleman, who are almost certainly a married couple, or they share the same passions (Ring, Lady-Gentleman, Heart).

The plot thickens!

  • We can look at the corner cards and see what they say; we have the deal or agreement (Ring) and something lucky or opportunistic about breaking it (Clover, Scythe). Someone sees advantage in this, perhaps. And the breaking (Scythe) appears to sneakily undermine or erode (Mice) love or passion (Heart).
  • The other corner involves a Letter, something written, that was promised or agreed in writing (Ring, Letter) and involves a Lady. She and the Gentleman who are involved in the deception, are a romantic couple or share the same passions (Lady, Gentleman, Heart).
  • So at the centre of this, we have the Lady and cutting or reducing something, breaking a deal, but in a deceptive or sneaky way (Scythe, Fox, Lady).
  • The deceptive person or people are thinking about a chance to agree or sign something, a contract, get it in writing (Clover, Ring, Letter), to “seal the deal” somehow.
  • At root, so he’s the driver, the Gentleman concerned may have a passion for undermining or theft (Mice, Heart, Gentleman), or he may be someone who’s unconfident and insecure in love.
  • If we look at the past of this deception, there’s an opportunity spotted, it seems, to reduce, undermine and diminish (Clover, Scythe, Mice), and now there’s a shared, agreed passion for it (Ring, Fox, Heart) or it’s about pretending to love something.
  • Ahead, there appear to be messages between the man and the woman (Letter, Lady, Gentleman) so it’s something they do in writing, maybe with private texts or emails, social media posts or blogs.
  • Reading the cards diagonally suggests that the man is an opportunist (Clover, Fox, Gentleman), and the diminishment is done in writing (Letter, Fox, Mice), perhaps making false claims of losses or lying.
Reading Summary

The enemy here is someone deceitful and false, most likely a man and a woman, who may be in a relationship with one another or share a passion. They certainly have some kind of agreement. The deception, though, is about breaking a bond or a link, a relationship where there is love or passion, or care. There is something opportunistic in this, for the man in particular, and it is designed to sneakily erode love, care and passion. Something was agreed in writing by or connected with the woman concerned. The woman is cutting or reducing something, breaking a link, deal or bargain, but doing so in a sneaky or deceptive way. Both of them are thinking about a chance to agree or sign something, a contract, get it in writing and  “seal the deal” somehow. The man concerned may have a passion for stealing things, enjoys the opportunity or getting the chance to do so, and there’s a deal or agreement for it; he may get paid. He may be pretending to love something he doesn’t. There are messages between the man and the woman  so it’s something they do in writing, maybe with private texts or emails, social media posts or blogs. The man is an opportunist, and may steal writing or copyrighted material that he passes off as his own.

Well!

You could go deeper, too, by using other 9-Card Spread to look more closely at the Deal involved (Ring), the Man and Woman and who they are, and what form the diminishment or loss (Mice) might take. So it’s a bit of a trail you can follow to try to get to the bottom of it, just using Lenormand 9-Card box spreads!

This isn’t the only option, however, even though it’s a pretty good method of investigation.

So let’s take a look at something else we could try

Method 2: Use A Tailor-Made “Unmasking The Enemy” Spread

Here’s a basic one cobbled together based on various spreads from other oracle decks. As it’s Lenormand, I’m making use of groups and pairs of cards.

First, pull out the significator for the Enemy you want to use. Then shuffle the cards and lay them as above. The categories, more clearly, are as follows:

  1. Enemy Significator
  2. Who Are They? (two cards)
  3. What’s The Risk Or Threat They Pose? (two cards)
  4. What Are They Doing? (two cards)
  5. Why? For What Purpose? (two cards)
  6. Advice On The Situation (three cards)
  7. Likely Outcome (three cards)

You may also want to flip the deck over, and see what card is on the bottom for a hint to underlying energy.

Here’s an example, using the Celtic Lenormand deck.

“Tell Me About My Deceitful Enemy”

Once again, I’ve picked the Fox card as my Enemy Significator for someone being deceitful, perhaps sneaky and underhand, but you could pick any of the others depending on the nature of your problem.

Who Are They?

Anchor-Dog

Ooh. So this looks like someone posing as a friend that the querent has known for a long time, a long term partner, associate or friend.

What’s The Risk Or Threat They Pose?

Garden-Tree

Poisoning a social circle, an unhealthiness that spreads among other people or those the querent deals with. Impacts the health of social or public relationships

What Are They Doing?

Moon-Mice

It looks as though whoever it is is undermining your reputation and how you’re seen by others

Why? What’s Their Purpose?

Ship-House

To advance their own good name, “family” or domain, to push themselves forward or ahead

Advice On The Situation, What To Do

Child-Snake-Birds

The querent should address any negative gossip with the nicer people they deal with and/or customers

Likely Outcome

Ring-Man-Bear

The querent may find she gets a powerful or protective man on-side

Underlying Energy

Fish

This appears to be a business association or issue

Reading Summary

The enemy here is someone deceitful and false in the business arena, and very likely a false friend who the querent has known or been advised by for many years. A long time associate, friend or business partner or fake supporter, so likely to be someone they’ve trusted or relied upon. Unfortunately, this persona’s activities could well be poisoning the querent’s social circle or customer base, spreading unhealthiness among others, the public, or those the querent deals with. They are undermining the querent’s reputation and how they are seen by others in order to advance their own good name or “domain” or brand. The querent should address any negative gossip, particularly with customers, and may find that she gets a powerful or protective male figure on-side as a result.

Method 3: See What… And Who… Shows Up In Your Grand Tableau

There are ways you can find out if there’s anything awry by taking a look at a Grand Tableau. Are you surrounded by friends… or foes? Is there anything untoward showing up near your Querent card? And if so, what? What should you be looking out for if you suspect there’s someone with an axe to grind,  or something strange going on?

Cards To Look Out For In Particular

Enemy Cards—Close By!

If a negative  “enemy” card is next to or near the Querent (so only a couple of cards away), it’s likely to cause them problems, the negativity of which may or may not be tempered by the cards around them. So once again, we’re looking for…

  • The Snake
  • The Fox
  • The Mountain

Check too for what’s around the Garden (People) also and how close it is to you.

Where’s the Whip card? It can often mean criticism and strife.

What’s happening around the Birds card? Might there be bad gossip, for instance?

And where are your “Friend” and support cards also; the Dog, The Child, for instance? Where’s the House?

You can check out my tips and resources on basic reading of the Grand Tableau here!

Resources

Take a look at this Grand Tableau, and think about what you’re seeing in terms of enemies and friends only for the same Querent who is female.

Here, we can see that the Querent has the Dog nearby, so she does likely have support, the Bear appears to be protective, but alas, she has the Mountain right next to her. This refers to an obstacle or, as the original Lenormand had in, “a powerful enemy”. So she needs to watch herself; someone has definitely got it in for her and is causing major problems. Again, it seems to be in the business sense (Fish), she has commitments, bonds and relationships on her mind (Ring), but because of that Mountain (and the previous reading if it’s the same person), she might want to be a little bit careful about who’s actually a friend and who’s a foe here, and whether or not there may be some envy going on (the Bear nearby can be a sign of envy for what you have materially. But it is also a strong and powerful as well as protective force). Hmm.

Alas, we see she has the double whammy of both the Snake and Fox nearby, which is not a good sign, and may be impacting customers with what they are doing (Child, Snake, Fox). Causing trouble and being deceitful, and there’s a secret or something hidden near that Child too. Hmm. It does seem to be to do with trade and progress (Ship). There’s a male figure right under the Fox, and the Letter above it. So there’s a Man involved, but is he writing false things, or perhaps stealing what the Querent has written, perhaps? Looking next to the Fox, we can see the House, so it may be a domain or “home” or her good name that’s affected, and as we have the Birds next to that followed by the Whip, it does indeed look like critical gossip impacting her good name.

The Garden card is a little way away from her, but as it has the Clouds above it, there are signs of problems or negativity being cast over “her people”. Again, there’s reputation involved here (Moon) and some sense of diminishment or being lost or whittled away in a way she’s unlikely to regain (Mice). She may be able to get power over the enemy (Mountain) through the Bear, and is probably in a stronger position than they are, but their enmity is threatening to squash her achievements and goals (Stars). She is likely to need to confront it soon.

Reading Summary

Our querent has a LOT of deceit and underhand behaviour around her right now. In the business arena, somebody appears to be standing in her way and needs to be confronted, although she’ll likely have more control over them than they her. There is a lot of dishonesty about so she needs to be careful about who she trusts, and to distinguish friend and foe. People are gossiping about her, being critical and telling lies in ways that could seriously affect her reputation going forward. and may already have done so in ways that are impacting her good name. Someone manipulative is nearby, most likely a man, an opportunist, who may be either badmouthing her in writing or taking her written work, so she needs to watch out for backstabbers. She  can probably overpower her enemy if she commits to doing so and maintain her goals and reputation, because she is stronger than they are and has experience and integrity. But this obstacle or enemy is particularly affecting her future goals and achievements, squashing and diminishing them. She needs to deal with them now, as any reputation or love lost through this is unlikely to be regained.
